For anyone who has been following my presence on the internet, this change shouldn't come as a big surprise as I've periodically migrated my web presence from a static html site (1994) to movable type (2002) to wordpress (2004) to joomla (for about 15 minutes), to drupal (2010) and then back to wordpress again. What is perhaps a bit different this time is that this migration marks something of a homecoming as I've officially abandoned the Content Management System where I've been dwelling digitally for a little over a decade. When things first got started with Movable Type and Wordpress, the idea of a CMS was convenient and quaint. People still used america online and geocities for hosting, so layout and design weren't really a concern. Databases were pretty basic in their deployment, and hacking was still a pastime of hobbyists and not yet salaried professionals. Things have changed, in some cases for the better - with new emphases on making the web accessible for persons with different abilities, aesthetics through user experience design, and the frameworks and database architectures available for client and server side web development have simply exploded. There is a great deal of good here. + +However, it would be an understatement to say that digital media and capitalism have not developed a stable or equal relationship. The uptake of the web by corporations and venture-capital funded startups have created an astonishing level of new technologies, energy, and noise. We now have digital-born media and marketing firms that are capitalised in the billions. Apple has been edging towards a $1tn capitalisation, currently hovering over $700billion. Google is at $655bn. Facebook, $430bn. I could go on - but you get the point. These are sums that exceed the GDP of many nations, and so the stakes here and the amount of power that can be mobilised is nearly unfathomable. And these firms have developed an uneasy relationship with the common good, representing themselves as contributing philanthropists and humanitarians, but conducting their business in ways that subvert the very intentions that were embedded in the design and architectures of the internet. Google's pervasive footprint offers a wide suite of so-called "free" services which provide the backbone for their bread and butter business as a marketing firm. Their mobilisation of user activity and identity as a product has paved the way for an array of truly sinister subversions of local and national politics. Facebook too has proven very bad at balancing their desire to develop a product with the need for user protection, privacy, and protection of the common good. But even more than these problems of privacy and exploitation, I fear the hegemony that these firms have begun to covet and protect. \ No newline at end of file diff --git a/content/presentations/regen.md b/content/presentations/regen.md new file mode 100644 index 0000000..a2a55ef --- /dev/null +++ b/content/presentations/regen.md @@ -0,0 +1,9 @@ +--- +title: "Researching scientists and activists" +date: 2017-05-22T08:58:04+01:00 +host: REGEN Network Meeting, Galiano Island, British Columbia, Canada +--- + +I presented a brief on my research for a group of restoration ecologists, environmental scientists, philosopher and theologians as part of a week-long inaugural workshop discussing the relationship of theology and restoration practice and imagining a possible (and exciting!) training programme for professional ecologists in restoration practice. + +Slides can be [downloaded here](http://jeremykidwell.info/files/presentations/presentation_20170522_regen.html). \ No newline at end of file diff --git a/content/presentations/ripon_common_good.md b/content/presentations/ripon_common_good.md new file mode 100644 index 0000000..e0b33a1 --- /dev/null +++ b/content/presentations/ripon_common_good.md @@ -0,0 +1,13 @@ +--- +title: "Session on Christianity and the Common Good" +date: "2017-07-14T11:30:00+00:00" +enddate: "2017-07-14T13:00:00+00:00" +host: "Ripon College Cuddesdon, Oxford" +duration: 7776000 +--- + +I'll be teaching a session as part of the Ripon College Cuddesdon Summer School on "Christianity and the Common Good". On this page I have links provided to data-sets that I've generated as part of my research as well as code and anything else that doesn't quite fit under "publications".

+As a scholar in the humanities, my research is non-traditional in that it draws on digital methods and resources quite frequently. This is in part because, prior to becoming an academic, I worked in the IT industry for several years. As a result, I can build a linux server, perform post-intrusion server security assessments, terminate fibre optic cables, parse through big (+geospatial) data sets using R, write code, and assemble computers from parts. Given this industry experience (for more, see LinkedIn) I like to serve as a bridge between scholars and practitioners in informatics and humanities, particularly on those tricky ethical issues that can often crop up and which can benefit from the insights of real experience and philosophical reflection. Whenever possible, my work is provided under an open Creative Commons license, so by all means please download and appropriate! -

I completed my PhD in theological ethics in 2013 and this research focussed particularly on the way that ancient narratives about craft-work might illuminate present quandaries in business, engineering, and design surrounding excellence, creativity, property, and more. Since then, my research has taken on a decidedly more contemporary context and more explicitly environmental concerns, exploring through ethnographic research what forms of political mobilisation are being generated by Scottish churches and (by comparison) other environmental community groups in response to climate change. My doctoral research sought to reveal ways that ancient narratives about craft-work might illuminate present quandaries in business, engineering, and design surrounding excellence, creativity, property, and more. Along these lines I have an abiding interest interplay of ethics, design, technology, and economics. Since 2013, my research has taken on the contemporary context more directly and placed my interest in environmental ethics in the foreground, using ethnographic methods to investigate how moral community and political mobilisation are being generated by British churches and (by comparison) other environmental community groups in response to environmental change.
